Start with the job the website needs to do

Choose the main action you want a visitor to take: enquire, buy, book or understand your offer. A website can support several tasks, but a clear priority makes the design and content decisions easier.

Describe the people you want to reach

Write down who your customers are, what they need to know and what might stop them taking the next step. Include the countries you serve, the devices people use and any language requirements.

Be specific about the scope

List the pages, products, forms and connections the website needs. Separate launch essentials from later improvements. Tell your agency which content already exists, who can approve work and whether you need help writing it.

Agree how launch will work

Your brief should cover domain access, hosting, redirects from old pages, form delivery and who checks the final site. Ask what is included after launch, how ongoing changes are handled and what you will own.
